Mark Nielsen has run many successful high tech companies and knows how to achieve an objective quickly, efficiently, and with fiscal responsibility.  As a fellow San Juan Capistrano resident, he shares our major concerns and will provide strong and fiscally conservative leadership to:

Resolve the growing traffic problems

Preserve our precious open space

Create a pedestrian-friendly, vibrant downtown

A vote for Mark Nielsen is a vote to preserve San Juan’s charm!

San Juan Capistrano today relies very heavily on the auto dealers and Costco for the majority of its sales tax revenue. While the recent approval of a massive amount of development has brought a one-time increase in fee revenue, there is no obvious plan for replacing that temporary revenue in the future. We need to be looking at a greater diversity of revenue streams for the future.

The projected Capital Improvement budget is projected to decrease by about 50% over the next few years. It is important for the next City Council to develop a plan to meet the future revenue needs of the City without negatively impacting the level of services and quality of life enjoyed by our citizens.

Mark Nielsen will use his extensive business background and expertise in turning around troubled companies to make sure the City is making the right decisions today to protect our fiscal status in the future. He has previously identified areas where the City appears to be over-spending and he will take a critical look at how our tax dollars are being spent.

As an example, Nielsen identified that the City’s Parks and Recreation Fees had not been increased in many years and that we were undercharging new development by hundreds of thousands of dollars. He also argued for a policy that City purchases of office furniture should look first for used/refurbished furniture that is usually at least 50 cents on the dollar versus new.

Mark Nielsen is a fiscal conservative who will insist on a clear showing that tax dollars spent will return a greater benefit to the citizens than we are paying. He believes in zero-based budgeting which requires ALL annual budgets to be justified each year, not just the increased amount from the last year.

If you agree with this approach to Fiscal Responsibility, Please vote for Mark Nielsen for City Council
