Unfortunately, a by-product of San Juan Capistrano being a crossroads for rail and access to the Interstate results in adding to already excessive traffic congestion. Mark Nielsen believes we must first change existing situations that increase traffic, such as:
- Stop approving new development projects that increase traffic without first reducing the impact of increased traffic
- Stop further destruction of the downtown village feel by preventing the I-5/Ortega Interchange expansion with cloverleafs
- Do not widen Ortega Highway with long stretches of sound walls that will merely attract more traffic from outside our City
- Pursue the extension of Avery to Antonio Parkway to relieve Ortega of future traffic from the Ranch’s 14,000 new homes
- Enhance Ambuehl School student safety by preventing the extension of San Juan Creek Road to La Pata
- Extend La Pata into San Clemente to ensure that garbage trucks from the south avoid Ortega
- Promote plans for an I-5/Stonehill off-ramp and improved on-ramp to relieve Dana Point traffic on Del Obispo
Mark knows that we must take immediate and significant action to reduce traffic congestion without just widening the roads – which simply adds more concrete, leads to even more traffic, and detracts from the character of our town – including:
- Working with the County to stop San Juan Capistrano from serving as a driveway to the I-5 for other cities.
- Designing creative ways to fund busing for our city’s students
- Providing daily transportation service specifically for our seniors
- Creating new or improved pedestrian, cycling, and equestrian facilities
- Enhancing public transportation, including alternative modes of transportation, such as free, trolley-style buses that operate daily and year-round, with routes that run the length of town
- Developing special deals with MetroLink or Amtrak trains, allowing stop-offs in San Juan Capistrano without requiring additional fares for continuing to the route’s final destination
If you agree with this approach to solving our Traffic problem,
Please vote for Mark Nielsen for City Council |
